Composite veneers vs composite bonding: what is the difference?

Both treatments use the same medical-grade nano-hybrid composite resin, but they cover different amounts of the tooth. Composite edge bonding (€180 to €350 per tooth) only adds resin to the biting edge or corners to fix a chip or small gap, whereas a composite veneer (€250 to €450 to €450 to €650 per tooth) covers the entire front face of the tooth from the gumline down to change both colour and shape.

How to know whether your teeth only need edge bonding or full-coverage composite veneers.

Three questions that decide between bonding and veneers

  1. Are you happy with the colour and front surface of your teeth after whitening? If your natural enamel whitens evenly and looks smooth, simple edge bonding on the tips is faster, more conservative and less expensive.
  2. Do you have white-spot lesions, mottled fluorosis, old discoloured fillings on the front of the teeth, or dark root-filled teeth? Whitening gel cannot erase deep internal discolouration or old fillings — a full-coverage composite veneer masks the entire front face seamlessly.
  3. Are your teeth slightly rotated or set back in the arch? To bring a tucked-in lateral incisor forward into line with the front teeth, the resin must build out the whole facial profile from the gumline down, which makes it a full composite veneer.

Questions patients ask

Can I combine composite veneers and edge bonding in the same smile?

Yes — dentists do this every day. For example, a patient might have full composite veneers placed on two small lateral incisors to build out their profile, and simple edge bonding on the two central incisors and canines alongside them.

Does a full composite veneer feel thicker than edge bonding?

A skilled cosmetic dentist layers a full composite veneer at just 0.3mm to 0.5mm thickness and feathers it cleanly at the gum margin, so your lip glides over it naturally within 48 hours.
